Winter Storm Alert: Stay Informed, Stay Safe!
A major winter storm is on its way, and we want to ensure you're prepared for any service disruptions. Here's what you need to know to navigate this snowy weekend.
Updated: January 24, 2026, 1:33 a.m.
The forecast predicts a snowy and bitterly cold weekend ahead. Our dedicated teams are already hard at work, salting outdoor station areas, deploying specialized equipment, and closely monitoring tracks and switches.
But it's not just about keeping the infrastructure running smoothly. We're also focused on ensuring the safety of our passengers and staff. As a result, there will be some service adjustments across our network, including subways, buses, and both the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad.
Safety First:
Our primary concern is always the well-being of our customers. With the storm expected to peak on Sunday and Monday, we strongly advise against unnecessary travel during these times. However, if you must venture out, here are some crucial tips to keep in mind:
- Allow for extra travel time. Plan ahead and give yourself some buffer.
- Exercise extreme caution, especially on stairs, platforms, and when boarding or exiting trains and buses. Ice can be treacherous!
- Stay informed by checking the MTA or TrainTime apps, or our website, for real-time service updates.
- If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to chat with our team via our apps.
Subway Service Adjustments:
In anticipation of the storm, some express trains will operate as locals this weekend. Many planned service changes have been canceled, so be sure to check the Weekender for the full list of updates.
Buses:
Expect longer wait times for local buses. To ensure safety, we'll be temporarily removing some buses from service to apply snow chains and withdrawing articulated buses during the storm.
Long Island Rail Road (LIRR):
The LIRR will operate on a modified Sunday schedule. This includes no service between Ronkonkoma and Greenport, and reduced service on the Babylon Branch with no direct trains to or from Grand Central.
Additionally, the following planned service changes have been proactively canceled for this weekend and into next week:
- Brooklyn weekend service suspension
- Kew Gardens, Forest Hills, Woodside westbound weekend bypassing
- Montauk weekday overnight busing
- Elmont-UBS Arena, Queens Village, Hollis midday westbound bypassing on Monday
Metro-North Railroad:
On Sunday, Metro-North will operate hourly service on the Hudson, Harlem, and New Haven lines. The New Canaan, Danbury, and Waterbury branches will follow their regular weekend schedules.
West of Hudson service on the Port Jervis and Pascack Valley lines will be temporarily suspended beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday. For the latest updates, visit NJTransit's website.
On Monday, trains will run on a Saturday schedule with additional rush hour trains. Check the TrainTime app for detailed information.
Stay Informed, Stay Safe:
We're committed to keeping you moving, even in the toughest weather conditions. Remember, your safety is our top priority. Stay tuned for any further updates, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
And this is the part most people miss: while we're doing our best to keep services running, sometimes Mother Nature wins. So, plan ahead, stay informed, and let's navigate this winter storm together!
