A thrilling cricket story unfolds as Washington Sundar's return to the Indian squad takes center stage!
The Comeback Story
India's captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has announced that Washington Sundar will be joining the team in Delhi for their upcoming match against Namibia on February 12th. This news comes as a relief to fans and the team alike, as Sundar has been sidelined due to a side strain injury since the first ODI against New Zealand.
"Washy is back with us, and he's doing great," Suryakumar shared after India's tense 29-run victory over the USA in their opening campaign match.
But here's where it gets controversial...
While Sundar's absence was initially covered by Ayush Badoni in the ODI series, the Indian team decided against replacing him in their T20 World Cup squad, despite his injury. The reasoning? The injury wasn't severe, and Sundar wasn't likely to be a first-choice player anyway.
And this is the part most people miss...
India's star pace bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, also missed the USA game due to illness, with Suryakumar revealing, "He had a high fever because of the weather, similar to how Abhishek Sharma was feeling under the weather."
In a dramatic first half, the USA gave India a massive scare, reducing them to 77 for 6. But Suryakumar's unbeaten 84 off just 49 balls turned the tide, leading India to a final score of 161 for 9, which was just enough to secure the win.
Suryakumar expressed confidence in his ability to rescue the side, but he also acknowledged that the batters could have shown more wisdom in their approach.
"I can't express how much pressure I felt," Suryakumar admitted. "But I believed in my experience and knew that I had faced similar situations before. Having played a lot of cricket in Mumbai's maidans, I understood that if I stayed till the end, I could make a difference."
He continued, "The wicket at Wankhede was slightly different from what we're used to. When we woke up that morning, there wasn't much sunlight, and the curator and groundsmen did their best to prepare the pitch. However, some things are beyond their control. There wasn't enough sunlight to properly roll and water the pitch."
Suryakumar emphasized the importance of learning from every experience, win or loss.
"Even after a win, we learn valuable lessons. Today, we realized that we could have batted a bit smarter. Two small partnerships could have gotten us to 160, instead of relying on one or two batters to see it through to the end."
So, what do you think? Was India's decision to keep Sundar in the squad a wise one? And how crucial was Suryakumar's role in turning the tide of the match? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
