Flu-like Illnesses on the Rise Among Children, Says Pediatrician
A leading expert in pediatric emergency medicine at Children's Health Ireland has reported a significant increase in children presenting with flu-like symptoms. Dr. Paddy Fitzpatrick shared his insights on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, highlighting the classic signs that parents should be aware of.
Dr. Fitzpatrick explained that children are currently exhibiting typical flu symptoms such as high fevers, persistent coughs, chills, body aches, sore throats, and a general feeling of discomfort. While not every child will be tested for the influenza virus, their symptoms are indicative of a potential flu infection.
He advised parents to seek guidance from reliable sources like undertheweather.ie and the HSE website for general care advice. However, Dr. Fitzpatrick emphasized the importance of trusting one's instincts as a parent. If a child's condition doesn't seem to be improving, parents should take action and seek further medical help.
According to Dr. Fitzpatrick, the majority of children can be safely managed at home. He recommended that parents expect their children to feel unwell, have reduced energy levels, experience stomach aches, and have occasional fevers. These symptoms are common during a flu-like illness.
While flu cases can occasionally be complicated by bacterial infections, Dr. Fitzpatrick assured that these instances are rare. He provided a list of warning signs that parents should watch for, such as a child's inability to recover quickly, lack of energy, inadequate fluid intake, breathing difficulties, or the presence of a rash that doesn't fade when pressed. These symptoms warrant immediate medical attention.
Dr. Fitzpatrick also highlighted the effectiveness of the flu vaccine, which is easily accessible to children through GPs and pharmacists at no cost. He encouraged parents to take advantage of this preventive measure to protect their children from the flu.
