Pokhara's playoff hopes were kept alive by Adam Rossington's stellar performance. Rossington, a 32-year-old English cricketer, showcased his prowess at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kirtipur. He played a crucial role in Pokhara's victory, scoring 108 runs in 58 deliveries, including 11 fours and 7 sixes. This was the NPL's third century, the second of the season, and the league's second-highest individual score. Rossington's partnership with Jason Roy, an English teammate who has represented England in numerous ODIs and T20Is, was instrumental in reaching the impressive total of 201/2 in 20 overs.
However, the match wasn't without its challenges. Pokhara's opening batsman, Kushal Bhurtel, was dismissed early, caught out at 18 off 17 in 4.5 overs. The team's score was 34/1 at the end of the powerplay, with little hint of the storm that was to come. Rossington's calm demeanor and powerful swings kept the team in the game, eventually leading to their success.
The Yaks, on the other hand, faced a different challenge. Their skipper, Sompal Kami, a key bowler for the Nepali men's team, struggled with the ball, giving away 50 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. The lack of a good partnership and momentum for the batters cost them the match, as they were bundled out for 167 runs in 19 overs. Despite this, the Yaks are out of playoff hopes after their fifth loss in six matches.
In contrast, Janakpur Bolts, the defending champions, started their title defense with a loss against Kathmandu Gorkhas. The team seemed to lose momentum, suffering defeats against Biratnagar Kings, Pokhara, and Sudurpaschim Royals. However, they found their rhythm against Chitwan Rhinos, with Anil Kumar Sah leading the charge. Sah, playing without the captaincy for the first time in the NPL, smashed 61 off 36 to help the team defeat the Rhinos by six wickets while chasing 177 runs. The Bolts and Rhinos still have a chance for the playoffs, similar to Pokhara and Lumbini.
The NPL continues to provide thrilling matches and showcase the talent of players from around the world. With more tournaments at the provincial, district, and club levels, domestic players can improve their skills and compete at a higher level.
