It's a dark day for sci-fi horror fans: the Dead Space franchise is reportedly 'on ice' once again. After a promising remake in 2023, it seems the necromorphs are going back into hibernation. Sources suggest that EA has no immediate plans to revive the series, whether through reboots, remakes, or any other means. But here's where it gets controversial... There's a glimmer of hope that EA, soon to be largely owned by the Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, might consider selling the Dead Space IP to alleviate some financial pressures.
The future of Dead Space has been uncertain since the remake's release. An extended ending hinted at developer Motive's desire to give Dead Space 2 (and possibly 3) the same treatment. In 2024, rumors of a Dead Space 2 remake were swiftly denied by EA, which stated Motive was focused on other projects, including an Iron Man game. But the story doesn't end there. Bloomberg reported that Motive explored both another remake and a brand-new entry for the series, but both were scrapped after the remake didn't meet internal sales goals.
And this is the part most people miss... It's not entirely surprising that Dead Space is being shelved again. EA has a history of doing this with its intellectual properties, especially single-player games. What stings more is that other horror franchises, like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, are experiencing significant resurgences. There's clearly a massive audience for horror games.
