New Secondary School Confirmed for Kettering! | Hanwood Park School Update (2026)

In an exciting development for Kettering, the government has officially announced plans to construct a new secondary school in Northamptonshire, marking a significant step forward for local education.

Initially greenlit by the Department for Education in 2021, this new free school will be located on the Hanwood Park estate. Recent government decisions have ensured that this project will proceed, even as other proposed free school initiatives around the country were put on hold.

Rosie Wrighting, the Labour MP representing Kettering, expressed her support for the decision, acknowledging that many residents have voiced concerns about the existing secondary schools being overwhelmed by demand. She stated that there is an urgent need for additional educational facilities to alleviate the pressure on these over-subscribed institutions.

The Hanwood Park area has ambitious plans in place, having received planning permission back in 2011 for the construction of 5,500 new homes, establishing it as one of the largest garden communities in the UK, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. The North Northamptonshire Council, which is led by Reform UK, highlighted that without this new school, there would be a considerable shortfall in secondary school places by the academic year 2027-2028.

Before the government’s recent confirmation, a council meeting featured local resident David Wilmot, who criticized the delays in establishing the school, calling it a "catastrophic failure". He pointed out that unless the situation changes soon, hundreds of children might be forced to travel long distances for education by 2030, which would not only disrupt family lives but also worsen traffic congestion, placing immense strain on the already stretched existing schools.

While the school was initially slated to open its doors by 2024, the lack of official updates from the government had left many uncertain about the project's timeline. Chris Langdon, the project director for Hanwood Park, expressed readiness to commence work, stating, "We are mobilized and prepared to move forward. This decision reinforces our confidence in the sustainability and future success of Hanwood Park, especially with new facilities such as the upcoming David Lloyd Club."

The council is now seeking more detailed information regarding the timeline for the school’s completion, which will be managed by the Orbis Education Trust.

Wrighting assured constituents that she would continue advocating for a definitive opening date and promised to provide updates as soon as further information becomes available.
