Winter Olympics 2026: Kirsty Muir's Road to Redemption
In a thrilling display of women's freestyle skiing prowess, Mathilde Gremaud successfully defended her Olympic title, claiming victory by a mere 0.38 points. While China's Eileen Gu, a star off the slopes, secured the silver medal, her final run ended in a crash, allowing Gremaud to celebrate her triumph with a Swiss flag draped around her neck, billowing in the wind.
Kirsty Muir, a British athlete with a promising medal prospect, is set to compete in the big air event starting this Saturday. Four years ago in Beijing, Muir, then just 17, became the youngest competitor for Team GB, but finished fifth in the big air and eighth in the slopestyle. Despite her initial setbacks, Muir has demonstrated remarkable resilience.
After Beijing, she achieved three World Cup podiums, but an MRI scan in December 2023 revealed a fully torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), which she had been competing with. Following surgery, she also addressed a persistent shoulder issue in early 2024. Eleven months later, she was back on the snow, and her journey culminated in a maiden World Cup gold in Tignes, March 2025.
This season, she has added two more World Cup golds to her collection, along with slopestyle gold and big air silver at the exclusive X Games, held just before the Olympics. Despite her recent success, Muir remains grounded, acknowledging the importance of her family's support.
'I'm excited about the big air, but I need to savor this moment,' Muir shared. 'I got to see my family, and their hugs were a bit too tight - I felt a bit claustrophobic! They're proud of me, no matter what, so I can take that away.'
