The world of college soccer is a thrilling, unpredictable arena, and Kacey White, an ESPN analyst and NWSL legend, is here to guide us through its complexities.
In a sport that's evolving rapidly, White believes that predicting outcomes has become increasingly challenging. Conference realignments have intensified the competition, making it harder than ever to pinpoint potential champions.
"It's a sport in flux, with more at stake than ever before. The constant movement of players, the growth of alternative pathways, and the ever-changing landscape of women's soccer in America have added an extra layer of chaos to what was once a more straightforward game," White explains.
But here's where it gets controversial: White, who covers the sport for ESPN+, believes that the players are getting better.
"The beauty of this game is that it teaches you about competition and resilience. You have to bring your A-game every day, and if you don't face adversity, you'll never truly know how to overcome it. That's the lesson that youth, college, and professional soccer all impart," she tells GOAL.
And this is the part most people miss: the ACC, a conference that's always been competitive, is now more tightly contested than ever. White's alma mater, UNC, won the national championship last year, but a repeat this season would be a massive surprise.
"Parity has always been a feature of the ACC, but it's becoming more and more intense. UNC, for instance, has a small roster with limited substitutions, and they just missed out on the top six in the ACC this season," she adds.
The landscape is shifting, and the abolishment of the NWSL draft has given players more freedom to explore their options. White sees this as a positive development, offering players more choices and a faster route to the professional game if they so desire.
"I see it as an opportunity for players to take control of their careers. If they feel they're ready for the professional game, they don't have to wait for the draft. It's a more personalized approach to their development," she says.
As for NCAA tournament predictions, White is taking a backseat. Having played for UNC, represented the USWNT, and spent six years as a professional, she knows better than to make bold predictions. But she's backing Stanford to take the crown.
