Get ready, rugby fans! Ireland's U20 team is gearing up for a thrilling showdown against South Africa, and the anticipation is building! Tighthead prop Sam Bishti has been chosen to lead the charge as captain for the Friday night clash in Cork. Head coach Andrew Browne has assembled a youthful squad ready to take on the defending world champions.
Bishti's leadership experience shines through, having captained Blackrock College to victory in the Leinster Schools Senior Cup back in March. He's been honing his skills with UCD in the Energia All Ireland League this season, proving his dedication and talent.
Interestingly, only three players from last season's U20 international squad are returning. These include second row Donnacha McGuire, wing Charlie Molony, and out-half Tom Wood – son of former Ireland captain Keith. Wood will be part of an all-Munster half-back pairing, alongside UCC's Christopher Barrett.
And this is where it gets interesting: Head coach Browne will be leading the coaching team for the upcoming 2026 U20 Six Nations, before Cullie Tucker takes over as the new boss for the 2026/27 season. A smooth transition is key, right?
The squad breakdown reveals a strong provincial presence: 11 players hail from Leinster, 6 from Munster, 4 from Connacht, and 1 from Ulster. Adding a unique international flavor, Fergus Callington from Durham University, who came through the Irish Qualified (IQ Rugby) system, will also be joining the team.
Here's the lineup for the Ireland U20 team facing South Africa:
