Imagine this: a massive deception, playing out for years, right under the noses of one of India's most revered religious institutions. The story of how a Uttarakhand dairy allegedly swindled the Tirupati trust, the guardians of the famous Tirupati laddu, is a jaw-dropper. Let's dive in.
The CBI's special investigation team, probing the ghee adulteration case, has uncovered some truly shocking details. The investigation, sparked by the arrest of Ajay Kumar Sugandh, who supplied chemicals like monodiglycerides and acetic acid ester, has revealed a web of deceit. Sugandh's supplies went to Bhole Baba Organic Dairy, a company contracted to provide ghee for the laddu prasadam.
According to the SIT's report, submitted to the Nellore ACB court, Bhole Baba Organic Dairy, founded by Pomil Jain and Vipin Jain in Bhagawanpur, Uttarakhand, never actually sourced any milk or butter. But here's the kicker: despite this, they managed to supply a staggering 68 lakh kilograms of ghee to the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) between 2019 and 2024. That's a lot of fake ghee!
The SIT's investigation has meticulously pieced together the elaborate scheme employed by the dairy's promoters. They essentially set up a fake desi ghee manufacturing unit, masquerading as a legitimate dairy. This allowed them to supply the spurious ghee, estimated to be worth a whopping ₹250 crore, to the trust. The investigation revealed that the promoters fabricated milk procurement and payment records. However, when investigators spoke with local milk farmers, it became clear that no milk had ever been purchased.
Pomil Jain and Vipin Jain took things a step further. They acquired a nearby defunct dairy unit and rebranded it as Harsh Fresh Dairy, located just a couple of kilometers from the Bhole Baba plant. Through Harsh Fresh Dairy, they procured vast quantities of palm oil and palm kernel oil from Budges and Budges, a Delhi-based company that imports palm oil from Malaysia. They also sourced various chemicals, including mono glycerides, acetic acid ester, lactic acid, beta carotene, and artificial ghee essence, from suppliers like Ajay Kumar Sugandh and Aristo Chemicals in Delhi. These ingredients were then transported in batches from Harsh Fresh Dairy to the Bhole Baba plant, where the fake ghee was manufactured on a large scale.
This case raises serious questions about the trust's oversight and quality control measures. What do you think allowed this deception to go on for so long? Do you think the penalties should be more severe? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
