Loiretech, a French manufacturing powerhouse, has just delivered a crucial piece of the puzzle to ArianeGroup's facility. We're talking about a full-scale mock-up of the rear heat shield structure, which is an essential component for the ExoMars mission's thermal protection system.
But here's where it gets controversial: while Loiretech is responsible for the initial mock-ups, they won't be crafting the final, flight-ready models. ArianeGroup's ExoMars Program Manager, Jérôme Bertrand, confirmed this in July, leaving many wondering about the reasoning behind this decision.
The European Space Agency (ESA) is leading this ambitious mission, with Thales Alenia Space at the helm, under a massive €522 million contract. The mission's goal is to deliver the Rosalind Franklin rover to Mars, and ArianeGroup plays a vital role in ensuring the spacecraft's survival during its entry into the Martian atmosphere.
Both the front and rear heat shield mock-ups will be coated with a special cork-based material called Norcoat® Liège, which provides ablative thermal protection. This material will be key to the initial qualification of the ExoMars thermal protection system.
Despite some funding challenges, the ESA's Human and Robotic Exploration programme director, Daniel Neuenschwander, confirmed that ExoMars has secured the necessary commitments. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher also highlighted NASA's contributions, including launch services and crucial components like a braking engine and radioisotope heater units.
