"Brexit has liberated us!" In the six years since the UK departed from the European Union, over 600,000 pages of complex EU regulations have been successfully avoided, as reported by GB News.
Since the moment on January 31, 2020, when the UK officially left the EU, approximately 10,000 directives, decisions, and regulations have been enacted that affect EU member states. To put this into perspective, if you were to stack all this paperwork, it would stretch about 112 miles—equivalent to the distance covered by six ferry trips between Dover and Calais.
Among the new regulations are proposals that could impose specific rules regarding the speed of vehicle windscreen wipers, alongside new requirements for businesses to draft comprehensive plans in compliance with the Paris Climate Agreement. Failure to adhere to these regulations could lead to penalties amounting to 5 percent of a company’s global revenue under the newly introduced Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).
In response to these revelations, Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel expressed her views to GB News, stating, "The UK economy is struggling under the burdens of increased taxes and overwhelming bureaucratic regulations imposed by Labour. Yet, Keir Starmer wants us to believe that our challenges stem solely from Brexit, rather than acknowledging his government's shortcomings."
She continued, "The reality is that leaving the EU has liberated us from vast amounts of restrictive regulations, and it’s disappointing that Labour hasn’t leveraged this opportunity."
Patel passionately argued, "Labour's attempts to sneak us back into the EU are simply a diversion from their own failings in governance. Instead of focusing on regaining control, they should prioritize revitalizing our economy and putting Britons back to work."
On a similar note, Mark Francois, Chairman of the European Research Group (ERG), remarked, "This timely analysis by GB News highlights the extensive volume of EU legislation that we have managed to avoid in just six years since our exit. However, if Sir Keir Starmer's proposed 'EU reset' goes through, which includes plans for 'dynamic alignment'—essentially adopting new EU laws automatically in certain sectors—then all the advantages we’ve gained might vanish, primarily because many Labour MPs are deeply pro-EU."
According to the House of Commons Library, taxpayers in the UK have saved an estimated £12.6 billion annually since the end of Westminster's financial contributions to Brussels. However, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) has indicated that Brexit is projected to result in a long-term reduction of about 2.7 percent in the size of the economy, despite the cessation of payments to the EU.
Additionally, analysis from the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) has cautioned that while the savings from eliminated fees are welcome, they pale in comparison to the anticipated losses in trade, investment, and productivity in the coming years.

Reform UK Deputy Leader Richard Tice commented, "This evidence further confirms that leaving the EU was an optimal decision for our nation. It has granted us the liberty to reduce bureaucratic hurdles and focus on supporting British enterprises. We must ensure this government does not reverse Brexit, or all we have achieved could be at risk."
Al Pinkerton, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson on Europe, criticized the former Prime Minister's handling of Brexit, saying, "Boris Johnson's poorly executed Brexit deal has encumbered British businesses with an additional two billion sheets of paperwork. This isn't what we meant by 'taking back control'; it's stifling growth with unnecessary regulation."
He added, "As long as this government continues to resist reestablishing a productive trading relationship with the EU, its strategy for growth will remain lackluster. A customs union between the UK and EU, as suggested by the Liberal Democrats, would eliminate unnecessary complications, bolster British exporters, and significantly accelerate our economic growth."
A spokesperson for the UK Government responded, "The repercussions of the previous Brexit deal are evident everywhere. British businesses are bogged down by excessive paperwork, and families are facing elevated costs at grocery stores. This is precisely why we are working towards a more advantageous agreement to optimize Brexit.
Our focus remains on dismantling these obstacles. Our proposed UK-EU reset, which encompasses agreements on food and drink trade as well as carbon linkage, is projected to inject nearly £9 billion annually into the UK economy by the year 2040."
