Cricket and Politics Collide: BCCI Orders KKR to Drop Mustafizur Rahman Amid Rising Tensions
In a move that’s sure to spark debate, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has instructed the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad for the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL). But here’s where it gets controversial: the decision comes on the heels of escalating tensions between India and Bangladesh, fueled by recent reports of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the directive, citing the ongoing developments as the primary reason. KKR will, however, be allowed to sign a replacement player once Rahman is released.
Saikia stated, ‘Given the current situation across the region, BCCI has directed KKR to release Mustafizur Rahman from their squad. We’ve also assured them that a replacement will be permitted if they request one.’ This decision follows intense criticism directed at KKR and co-owner Shah Rukh Khan for signing Rahman, despite strained diplomatic ties between the two nations. The move has divided opinions, with some arguing it’s a necessary step to respect national sentiments, while others see it as an overreach of politics into sports.
And this is the part most people miss: Rahman was acquired by KKR in a high-stakes mini-auction in Abu Dhabi for a whopping INR 9.20 crore, after a fierce bidding war with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His inclusion in the squad was initially celebrated as a strategic move, given his impressive IPL record—65 wickets in 60 matches across teams like Sunrisers Hyderabad, Mumbai Indians, and Delhi Capitals. In fact, he even played for Delhi Capitals in the 2025 IPL season as a replacement, picking up four wickets in three matches.
The controversy doesn’t stop there. Political figures from the BJP and Shiv Sena have openly criticized Shah Rukh Khan, labeling him a ‘traitor’ for signing Rahman. The tension escalated after the death of Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu man in Mymensingh, Bangladesh, last month, which further strained relations. With multiple incidents of violence against Hindus reported in Bangladesh, calls to remove Rahman from the IPL grew louder.
But here’s the bigger question: Where do we draw the line between sports and politics? While BCCI’s decision may appease some, it raises concerns about the autonomy of cricket franchises and the potential for political interference in the sport.
